Can you buy birth controls over the counter?

Well is not that I had sex, but I just want to know if that is possible. If it is, is it really over the counter , or do you just have to ask the pharmacist , and what if you are a guy, can you still buy them??. Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I'm just curious.
